Hacking Updating safely

To start, yes I barely know what I'm talking about. I asked this question first in the n00b paradise thread and it went ignored.

About halfway through last year I installed Luma on my N3DS. Sometime since then I read an article on the front page news of GBAtemp saying that some new development has come about in 3DS land and next time CFW users update there is an extra step they need to take.

My system version is 11.4.0-37E
Not sure about my Luma 3DS version. I don't know how to check.

What is this extra step I must take? Or is my memory playing tricks on me?

Hold Select on boot. Look at what version Luma you have.

• If it is 7.0.5 or lower follow https://3ds.guide/a9lh-to-b9s
• If it is 7.1 follow https://3ds.guide/updating-b9s
• If it is 8.0 update to the latest Luma with Luma updater and then update your system from System Settings
• If it is 8.1 then update from System Settings
