Apple Updating Jailbroken iPhone 3GS

Hey guys,

So I've been stuck on 3.1.2 on my iPhone 3GS for some time now and wish to update the firmware.
My first question is: which latest firmware do you all recommend?

Next is: does updating the firmware (which leads into re-jailbreaking I assume) act as a restore on your device (as in all apps gone, songs need to be re-synced, all game highscores gone)?

Is there a way to update (then re-jailbreak) without losing high scores in games and such?

Does anyone have a good guide to jailbreaking whichever firmware you guys recommend (from an already jailbroken device)?

Do you have a mac or pc. This will help me identify the process to keep game saves/highscores.

Sorry for being bleak.

PC- Windows 7 Ultimate.
iPhone 3G2 3.1.2

Plug your Device in and open iTunes. Right click on the device and select backup. This will do a full back up of everything. The game saves will re-appear once you put you apps back on. Do you have the 4.1 ipsw for your device (because 4.2.1 is tethered on your device), if not you need to download it. (a man named felixbruns helps out) When downloaded you need to attempt to restore. To do this shift-click on the restore icon in iTunes for your device. At this point you need to select the ipsw. If all goes well you should be on 4.1 and you need to download GreenPois0n from the gbatemp jailbreak guide. If this does not work you have two options, if you had your SHSH Blobs for 3.1.2 you can downgrade back to it. If not you will need to update to 4.2.1 and use a tethered jailbreak. Also do you rely on an unlock?

And no, I do not rely on unlocks. Just the jailbreak.

An ipsw is the update file for a iDevice.

Ahh okay. So in steps:

1- Plug in iPhone and open iTunes.
2- Right-click iPhone and Backup.
3- Download 4.1 IPSW.
4- Shift-click restore icon in iTunes and select the 4.1 IPSW.
5- Download Greenpois0n and follow instructions.

And that's it?
What do I do with the backup? Just resync? or...?

If any thing goes wrong,(like it wont update to it) You can downgade back to 3.1.2 or update to 4.2.1 and use a tethered jailbreak.

I've tried several times now- I can't restore using the 4.1 IPSW.

I've tried getting it (iPhone 3GS version) from 2 different sources, and I updated iTunes, but I still get the error:

"The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (3194)."

... when it tries to verify the restore with Apple.

I have allowed iTunes through my firewall and anti-viruses.

Any ideas?

It's because it checked that the last version is 4.2.1 and it'll force you to update to 4.2.1.

dude, you can't restore because you don't have the SHSH back'd up for 4.1
so if oyu have the older 3GS then you can jailbreak unteathered with redsn0w

You said you were jailbroken, so you probably saved your shsh blobs. Cydia automatically gets them for each other firmware that comes out. So you probably have 4.1 shsh blobs. You need to get tiny umbrella, press start tss server, and then restore to your firmware (with tiny umbrella still open). And by the way, a restore was not necessary. You could shift click update with tiny umbrella open to update to a firmware, without losing any data.

He was only on 3.1.2 Also he would have messed up his phone due to the jailbreak.

I recommend you to jailbreak it tethered anyway, I have one 3GS with new bootrom and it isn't a problem for me, you just need to keep it turned ON everytime, and if you run out of battery or need to reboot it, its very simple to 'jailbreak' it again!

You can use an app for windows called AirPrint Activator and it'll allow your iphone to see any printer in your network and let you print through them! It's veeeery cool!!!

now i want to get it to 4.??
on the RedSn0w page it says something about waiting for an unofficial whatever.

I just need to upgrade for some apps that need at least 4.0 so i don't need the newest just iOS4
and I still want to use my alditalk card

you can update through itunes. get the 4.0 .ipsw from felixbruns.de and pen itunes, then restore to 4.0. then jailbreak with sn0wbreeze for mac/PC or pwnagetool for mac
