Hacking Updates from game disk?

Just being unreasonably paranoid and failing miserably at googling the info myself.

When I put in 'Super Smash Bros Wii U' or 'Splatoon', instead of the game icon there is a button for 'Start: System Update' but I can't for the life of me find WHAT update is going to be applied.

All searches end up with game specific updates and don't tell me what console system update is being applied, which is what I want to know before I ruin something by updating too far.
