I'm sure some people will disagree with me, as this is a quite outdated method of updating. But i've been modding PS3's since 2011 and i have never bricked or broken something with this method:

I was always instructed to return to OFW 3.55 first, and once your at that firmware, enable QA flag on your console, and then finally install the latest rebug via a FAT32 formatted USB flash drive. But please ENSURE there is NO PS3 disk in your blu-ray drive, as your PS3 will always grab an update from the disk in priority over USB flash drive NO MATTER WHAT.

I always keep a PAL YouStar! game BD in my drive, as it contains 3.55 update just to be safe. Oh and completely disabling wi-fi connections and unplugging LAN cables couldn't hurt, either. Good luck! :)
