Misc Update game without updating system software?

Alright, so quick question for you lot, since I can't find any information elsewhere; I recently got a copy of Splatoon out from the library, and want to give the online modes a try. I'm currently on 5.3.2u and holding off updating because of the recent webkit exploit. Problem is, the game has an update available, and it won't let me download it without first updating the system. My question is then is this: Is there any way to update a game without being forced to update the system as well, or am I just screwed from accessing online multiplayer for the time being?

You wouldn't been able to get online anyway. Big N made it impossible (for now) to play games online with older firmware. sorry.
