Does it work if you install a clean unmodified home_menu.cia ?
I just did a recovery of my NAND "Win32DiskImager" after the second brick and my edit is visible in my GW emuNAND power off menu, but when I tried again to make sure, and this time to SD, FBI give me a "Install failed!" It went back to normal after NAND Inject with "emuNANDTool_1.0.3".
Then I tried to install it in emuNAND NAND, and after a reboot sysNAND got the original massage, but emuNAND got the edit, witch is fine by me.
So here comes the question is this turtorial is for editing sysNAND HOME MENU or emuNAND?

So here's my first edit (took time because I had to find a 32bits version of makerom)
Nothing big, just to test if it worked

I changed the playcoin icons color

I don't know how it works with GW, sorry. But it should work if you follow every step in the OP, including encrypting cia and compressing the files.

Well apparently it does, and that's what I wanted. So I will try to do a Polish translation of the emuNAND, thanks guys I'm off to work.:yay3ds:

I may work on fiddling with the layout stuff tomorrow.
It's interesting to see you guys do all that color stuffs.
Custom home menu color patches in cfw coming soon(tm).

Will updating break changes made?

If/when Home is updated, and if you didn't boost [enough] the version number, yes it will be replaced with a stock one!

could I do this with the RF home menu cias from that iso site?
Yes, but any major CFW now supports region free without using romhacks of Home!

Where is the PlayCoin Icon?
hud_LZ.bin
Just like everything else. That's what I am working on currently. (Also I am doing that in a Hex Editor. it's easier that doing that other stuff imo)

When I run Part1.bat, I get only one file. It seems to be compressed, but MBST Editotr Reloaded and 3DSExplorer won't decompress it...

I decrypted the region free home menu module from <snip>, because my cfw has no region free.

Edit your "Part1.bat" and put this code instead:
Code:
ctrtool.exe --content=SystemApp HomeMenu.cia
ren SystemApp.0000.* SystemApp.0000.00000082
3dstool.exe -xvtf cxi SystemApp.0000.00000082 --header NCCH.Header --exh DecryptedExHeader.bin --exefs DecryptedExeFS.bin --romfs DecryptedRomFS.bin --logo Logo.bcma.LZ --plain PlainRGN.bin
3dstool.exe -xvtf exefs DecryptedExeFS.bin --exefs-dir ExtractedExeFS --header ExeFS.Header
3dstool.exe -xvtf romfs DecryptedRomFS.bin --romfs-dir ExtractedRomFS
