Hacking This backup method still works?

I think so, but you need a ds (phat) / lite to use that tool (afaik, might be wrong tho).

yes, why it shouldn't work?

if you gonna backup hg\ss or 5 gen games, there was a note... some software had problems to copy the saves because the IR module changed stuff (you will get a 0kb file or something unusual)... but try it anyway, if you will not be able to copy it, you will need another tool which i can show you where to find it
