Hi. I've finally got a Nintendo Switch. It's serial number is in the 'Unpatched' region according to https://nh-server.github.io/switch-guide/user_guide/getting_started/

I have bought a USB-A to USB-C cable, a 256GB micro SD card, and a RCM Jig (from https://switchjigs.com/). Of course, I also have a micro SD card reader and a laptop, and downloaded YouTube from the Nintendo Switch eShop.

After reading the whole guide on https://nh-server.github.io/switch-guide/, I still have some questions:

1) Do I need to insert my SD card into the Nintendo Switch before I start?

2) Do I need to keep the RCM Jig on the Switch all the time, even after hacking?

3) Any other common mistakes I need to be aware of?

Thank you

1. Yes, just make sure it is formatted FAT32 in Windows. To do this with your capacity, use a tool like Fat32Format as the default Windows 10 formatter will not do this. If you are unable to do this, then the TegraExplorer payload that the guide uses also has an option to format to Fat32. Just make sure you do that before you make the emunand partition.

2. You do not need to keep the RCM Jig in for more than a few seconds. Wait around 2 seconds after your switch is booted into RCM and you can take the jig out. You don't even need to push a payload first.

3. Make absolutely sure that you make a nand backup and put it on a safe place that is not your SD card. There is a surprising amount of people who think this is unnecessary and they don't do it, but then their Switch gets permanently bricked.

  1. How do you plan on hacking it without the SD card?
  2. The jig is for entering RCM. Once you're in RCM, that's it
  3. Always make a backup of your eMMC including BOOT0/BOOT1. You don't necessarily need the full raw eMMC and eMMC SYS is sufficient but be aware if you go down this route that you will not have a backup of your save and game data as those are in the eMMC USER
