there is a cheaper alternative to the PulseVU out there. I saw it a couple days back on some forums. If I find it I will post it here for you. It's basically some homebrew code that runs on a PIC microcontroller. You can make it all yourself if you are handy with soldering and have a PIC programmer.
 
I wouldn't like the light to be on all the time, it'd be annoying. I would however like it to stay on until you read your new message, even if you turn your wii on or off
I second that for sure. Because if my girlfriend uses the Wii she wont check the messages and if she turns it off I wont know there are new messages (I dont check cause the number below the envelope is usually game play time etc)
