PS1/2 Struggling with game swap trick

So finally got my hands on AuF to mod my slim with freemcboot but when swapping the game and launching the second level it just gets me an endless black screen. I've been doing the swap at the main menu and was wondering a)is this the right place and b) how strict is the timing for the swap?. Thanks.

Tried this on the mission briefing once then a realised there was another screen past that with the button configuration on it which I tried twice but still didn't work.

I'll try that again tomorrow once I've ripped and burned a new iso just to make sure everythings right.

A little more info, when I switch the music just stops in the game (sounds still play and everything still works). Don't know if this is significant but was worth mentioning.
