I haven't played the game yet but was thinking of getting it. I've read the story is really bad or non-existent, depending on who you ask. Is that true?

Apparently it's on Bungie's website rather than be in the game itself, like you know, most games usually work like.

Supplementary materials are, not the core story. I don't mind that at all since I don't normally dwell in zillions of codex entries anyways - the game tells you enough to be enjoyable. As for the story of Destiny, it's really more of an introduction to the universe - campaign-wise it's pretty short. The spoiler-less story goes like this:

The Earth was "visited" by an unidentified orb called "The Traveler", this orb (machine or creature, you don't really know) gave people technology thanks to which humans entered a golden age of space exploration and colonized nearby planets. This expansion did not go unnoticed and humans were attacked by an undisclosed power called "The Darkness" (could be a cataclysm, another orb like The Traveler, you don't really know) and subsequently by four races - the Fallen, the Hive, the Vex and the Cabal. You play the role of a Guardian - a warrior from the past resurrected by a Ghost, a living machine assigned as your partner and created by "The Traveler" in its dying breath. Your mission is very simple - prepare for the return of "The Darkness" and protect the last human settlement.

    Simple enough, isn't it?

    I forgot
    Except no?

On Destiny's site are "Codex" entries, it's just a shit ton of lore only "hardcore" lore fans give a shit about. The story is explained during gameplay and cutscenes.

It's a multi-player FPS game. Since when did stories matter in those?

It's a decent romp for 15-20hrs with next to no story until the DLC comes out.
I hit lv.27 did the raid and sold it. It needed to ship with like 20 strikes and 5 raids to be relevant.
After lv.20 you literally play the same levels over and over which gets old extremely faat.
There are better games out right now like Mordor (platted!), Evil Within (nearly finished) and huge games next month like ACU and Dragon Age 3. All of these titles beat Destiny imo.

Well, you could make that same argument about a lot of games. "It's just an survival game, since when stories matter in those?" That didn't stop The Last of Us.
And you play the same levels over and over? Yeah, I might have to pass then. I'll wait for a price drop.

You could argue that you play the same level over and over again in GTA, but that's not a problem since the level is huge. Destiny has a similar approach - it's a couple sandboxes with missions to do in. It's not a story-heavy game, the emphasis is on multiplayer and cooperation.

That's true, I guess I should have asked if the missions are varied? If one is like more sleathy whereas another is more action-packed, that'd be ok.

The Raid is where mechanics change up heavily, including "Destroy the CPU's Cores!" Sections, "Guard the Flag" Sections, "Metal Gear Solid" Sections (complete with Crouch walking/not jumping being the smart thing), Megaman Block Puzzles, and a Shield that makes for great lemonade.

Otherwise missions remain fairly standard. Bungie has heard complaints and aims to fix those, but admittably the stories all tend to be varied and repeating the same strategy every time won't always work.

As far as story: If you actually CARE about story you got to remember this game's only got chapter 1 out. It's meant to be a story put over 10 years of development. This means they couldn't reveal much, the fact you kill a

says a lot about how far in the story we do get, even if it's little in the bigger picture.

The game's currently focused on gathering info on the enemies and stopping a few low scale but major threats they are setting against humanity. Examples include the Chamber of Night ritual on a certain object, the Nexus Strike where you are halting the Vexification of a planet, and the Black Garden's agenda.

As far as gathering info, you got the "Last Array" where you learn of remaining colonies (it seems) of humanity in space, "The World's Grave" where you steal Hive knowledge, "The Archives" where you leech a lot of lost knowledge from the Golden Age, and basically all the Mars missions that are non-vex related as we never REALLY set against the Cabal excluding the strikes.

Deeper story (basically the 'common knowledge' of the universe, with a number of deeper tidbits) are restricted to the grimoire/codex on the site. Mostly because honestly, you got two options: A story with hours of cutscenes to exposition everything, or a story with little in it so people can enjoy their action. They found the mid point.

Can we all agree that games like Destiny, Titanfall, probably some others are just being lazy in making a proper story? Or maybe it's just me. I hope this isn't the future of video games, cause that would totally suck.

Well, Mass Effect was able to last for a long time, but still had a good story. I don't know, maybe this game just isn't for me. It sounds like the story is too half-baked for my tastes.

That's the exact reason I still play the game. It has a very "first person PSO" feel to it which really scratches an itch that most games can't scratch for me.

Anyone who is even remotely concerned about the story probably shouldn't be picking up the game in the first place. You dont play Destiny for the story, you play for the never ending, bullet slinging quest for sweet lootz.

Or option three: optional ingame logbook entries/codex thingies/whatever that you get from doing sidequests or finding them across the world or other things.

The story never intrigued me, however, messing around the maps was fun while it lasted. Didn't enjoy the multiplayer much as I'm not an FPS vet and competitive multiplayer isn't my cup of tea. I think there was co-op too but my memory is kinda vague of it since I've been quite busy in Shadow of Mordor (arguably one of the top 3 titles of 2014) and AC Unity (while not amazing, good nonetheless)
