So here's the deal: When the free Portal promotion was going on, I got it. It was my first Steam game. Now I want to purhase Garry's Mod, but Steam claims I don't have a compatible game. Upon reading, I found that the promo copies or Portal don't work with Gmod, because it doesn't include the Source SDK or something. I would just buy HL2 or something, but I don't really want to pay for it just so I can use Gmod, plus my parents won't let me get it anyway >_>. Is there any way I can get it working? Any help appreciated, thanks in advance.

Every game on this (http://store.steampowered.com/search/?category2=16) list had the Source SDK. HL2: Deathmatch does not count.

Yeah, but apparently the trial ones didn't or something. I'm not entirely sure.

Obviously Steam wants you to buy a game that includes Source SDK.
It looks like The Orange Box is on sale too, I say go get that. You won't regret it

Or, you could find a retail copy of any of them games for cheap and then get Gmod.

This man is correct. Buy the OB then Gmod. You'll get far more use out of TF2 than Gmod and Hl2 and its eps are an added bonus.

Problem is, with my parents I'll never be allowed to play them anyway, just use their data for Gmod. That's why I was asking, I don't really want to pay for a game I'll never play.

Edit--Here's where I got my information:http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?p=22023023

Any help? Anyone? I guess I could just spend $5 on HL2 Deathmatch, but...

Gmod is exactly that, a mod.
You'll need to buy at least one source game.

I'm wondering why your parents let you buy gmod but nothing else O.o

Also I suggestion HL2. Since any source game will let you play Source mods (There's alot of good ones), HL2 will let you play Synergy.

Gmod is a mod, Portal is rated T. All the other source games are rated M. So yeah, they won't let me.

So about getting HL2... I thought all Source games included the HL2 items and stuff. I'll probably get it and just not play it, I'd imagine my parents would be okay with that

I can't be the only one amazed at a parent looking at ESRB Ratings right?

Well if you look at Portal now (http://store.steampowered.com/app/400/). It has source SDK. You could probably make a new Steam account and buy it.
OR Since Orange Box is only a dollar more, convince your parents its a good deal and get that.
=D

You do understand that you need to have games for G-mod to work.. right?

For example, G-mod accesses files in your computer that are compatible with it. You have no games, you cant mod.

Also, tell your parents to get over themselves we live in the 21st century.
