Steam Data Leak?

Hello everyone,

So, I've seen a lot of this news recently (since yesterday). Apparently, Steam has suffered from a data leak.
I see this a lot on my facebook feed, but all from pages that I know send "clickbait news".
I did a quick google search, and all results are from websites I never really heard about before.

I'd like to know if there really was a data breach and if there are really some recommandation from Steam/Valve (like changing passwords? Changing 2FA? Are payment method at risk? Paypal? etc)
If there is really such breach, maybe front paging something about it, since there are no thread about it and I'm pretty sure a lot of people here use Steam.

It's a hoax. There is no such breach. Steam and Twilio have denied that such a large breach ever happened, and if there ever was, they would've made an announcement and notified everyone. The hoax stemmed from an AI-generated post on LinkedIn of all places, claiming that 89M+ user records are being offered for $5,000, which sounds too good to be true. C'mon now, $5,000 is highly unlikely for this type of breach.

If you use Steam Guard then you'll be fine. No point on panicking over false information. This is why you should never trust social media as a news source.

Alright, thanks man. I was just wondering. Didn't click on any of those news so I didn't even know about that 5000$ thing.

I haven't heard of Steam ever been the victim of a data breach. The only time they've gotten hacked, as far as I know, predates to 2011 when their forums got taken over. https://gbatemp.net/threads/steam-forums-down-after-suspected-hacker-attack.313016/

Well, since this "news" was spreading everywhere, and since a lot of the facebook groups and websites talking about it were unknown to me, and since GBAtemp is a site I trust for news, my best guess was to ask here if it was real or not

Well, it's good that you asked, because everybody's talking about it on every place imaginable. I am surprised that all it takes is for an AI post to cause massive outcry, and without the given context, it's understandable why.
