Hacking Discussion Starting with fresh install, need suggestions please

Hello,

I am coming back to the switch scene after a long time, currently switch is running on version 4.1 and early SX OS i believe 1.0. I have been reading around regards to emuNand and would also like to upgrade, what steps can i follow to be the best of doing this?

1. Backup saves using Checkpoint.
2. Restore Nand Backup including boot files 0/1, and keys?
3. Upgrade using Choi... (have option to back to 4.1) and then do the EmuNand?
4. Restore Saves.

Also during above process will need to make any new backups of Nand so will i be OK with one already done?

I will appreciate if someone confirms steps above right with links to best tutorial i can follow.

3) Create EmuNAND
4) Update clean SysNAND if you want to use it online (only update with official system update to keep your NAND clean). Keep in mind that this will burn fuses.
5) Update EmuNAND with ChoiDujourNX

4. I am not interested in playing online so do i still need to update SysNAND? Looking to update only so play newer games. I would want to make sure i can go back to version 4.1 if required in future.

If you don’t care about online, you don’t need to update your SysNAND. Just keep it at 4.1.0.

You can convert all new games/updates to a lower firmware using the reNXpack on PC...and if you prefer XCI over nsp..you can convert the resultant nsp to xci, using the NSC builder.

Not all games will work on lower fw after converting crypto with either tool. I'm on 5.1 and still can't play a lot of games. FF7 , dragon's dogma, tangledeep, mortal Kombat, just to name a few

So if i were to upgrade without burning fuses will i be able to play games requiring never firmware also be able to restore to older version if required?

Yes 99% of games I'll work on 7.0.1 and all work on 8.0.1.

If you want 100% clean sysNAND and newest fw you will have to burn fuses. But as you said you don't care about online you can update with ChoidujourNX OR officially WITH ATMOSPHERE without burning fuses, but technically won't be clean and MAY get banned this way as cfw and homebrew involved.

But i guess if i do decide to ever go online i could just restore my nand first backup and do clean upgrade at that point?

Yes that is what most people do! Many have reported this is the 100% safest way.

You are in a very good spot so long as you keep your 100% clean back up. Even if you burn fuses you can downgrade just not boot without hekate or atmosphere as you will need custom bootloader to bypass the fuse check. It's more of a convienece thing at this point, you won't be able to simply press the on button and boot with burnt fuses

I only can answer the first part of your question. If you don't upgrade your sysnand anything above what it comes with and like to use a jig. Then yea its completely okay to disable autorcm.

You don’t need autoRCM if you don’t update SysNAND. Only SysNAND can burn fuses because you use Nintendo bootloader to boot. If you accidentally boot to OFW, you will be safe. My switch, for example, is on SysNAND 2.1.0 and EmuNAND 7.0.1 and it works fine. I have only 2 burnt fuses. After you have created EmuNAND, you can choose to boot to EmuNAND in the SX OS menu.

@Philliyxx You're right ... I tried the suggested games and they dont work after the conversion to the lower firmwares...Its time to make a emunand.

Guys,

So i got everything working but have decided to go for a bigger SD card 512gb, will i have start all over again?

Is there a way i can copy current hidden emuNand partition and transfer to new SD card? I have many games and users on the switch and will be pain again to do saves and restore for each user.

Any ideas please.
