Hacking Spotpass problem

I am currently playing bravely default and there is a spotpass thing you can do to obtain villagers for your town. I go to the guy that saves and in order to get the villagers I have to choose the "Update Data" option. But when I do this i get an error saying "You cannot use online features with this game card". Anyone know how to fix this?

It's on 8.1. Is it not working because GW is not compatible with the 9.0.0 update or does the bravely default rom have to be a .3dz file instead of .3ds?

I believe it has to be a 3dz.

The save should still work.

It won't work unless his rom already had a valid header.
