The Source Engine is kind of a big deal. It's been around since Half Life 2, has been the stable backbone behind Valve's games, and has been relatively open for modding and experimentation.

Well, if files hidden in the newly released Source Filmmaker are to be believed, it's getting a sequel.

Fan site Valve Time reports that more than 60 references to the Source Engine successor have been found in the script files behind recently-released Source Filmmaker.

As you can see from one line of code below, the references aren't exactly vague either:

'''Return an str with the current engine version. If key doesn't doesn't exist, assume 'Source', otherwise invalid -- assume next-gen 'Source 2'.'''

Another community member has discovered new "Source 2 tools" icons stashed away in the Filmmaker script files.

Here's the Valve Time thread if you'd like to see exactly what these guys have uncovered.

Recently when talking about the Steam Engine, they guys at Valve said they, "...don't like to brag, but Source is considered the most flexible, comprehensive, and powerful game development environment out there. And it's about to get even better."

Without looking at the thread...

1 - Did they actually find tools, or just hints that tools might exist?

2 - Planning ahead is important.

(From what I understand, anyway) It seems to be, for the most part, references to a new engine within files. One sample line: "Return an str with the current engine version. If key doesn't doesn't exist, assume 'Source', otherwise invalid -- assume next-gen 'Source 2'."

Plus, they seem to have found some Source 2 Icons "stashed away" in the Source Filmmaker files, so that's encouraging. I can't post the images in here, but they're right in the Valve Time link.
