Hi everyone!

I've ported Sonic R to the Nintendo Switch! :)

This is a native Switch port based on jnmartin84's open-source Sonic R reimplementation, which recreates the 1998 PC version of the game in portable C.

The game is running natively under Horizon OS using SDL2 and a GLES compatibility layer, with Switch controls, audio, saves and multiplayer support.

Features

  • Native Nintendo Switch homebrew port
  • Stable 30 FPS gameplay
  • Full-screen 16:9 presentation
  • Native Switch controller support
  • Switch-specific network lobby controls
  • Nintendo Switch software keyboard support
  • Automatic save/ghost folder creation
  • LAN multiplayer
  • PC ↔ Switch cross-play
  • Automatic LAN host discovery
  • Direct IP connection support
  • Experimental internet cross-play through a reachable PC host

Multiplayer

LAN multiplayer between PC and Nintendo Switch is working and has been tested successfully.

You can either host on the Switch and join from PC, or host on PC and join from the Switch.

The Switch version also has a Direct IP option. This means it can connect to a PC host over the internet as well, provided the PC is reachable on UDP port 7847.

The Switch itself does not currently support the upstream matchmaking service, so full native matchmaking is not available yet.

Network Controls

  • L — Host / Start Race
  • R — Join / Search
  • Y — LAN Mode
  • D-Pad Left / Right — Change Character
  • D-Pad Up / Down — Change Track
  • ZR — Change Game Mode
  • Minus — Open software keyboard
  • Plus — Direct IP Join
  • A — Confirm / Send
  • B — Back

Installation

Copy:

sonicr.nro

to:

sdmc:/switch/sonic-r/

You must provide your own legally owned Sonic R game data.

The required folders and full installation instructions are available in the GitHub README.

Credits

Huge thanks to jnmartin84 for the Sonic R reimplementation that made this port possible:

And of course thanks to everyone involved with devkitPro, libnx, SDL2, Mesa and the Nintendo Switch homebrew community.

Legal

No copyrighted Sonic R game data is included.

You must legally own Sonic R and supply the original game assets yourself.

This project is not affiliated with SEGA, Traveller's Tales or Nintendo.

Hope you enjoy it! :)

Thanks mate going to test it tonight :D

60fps is not possible ? (maybe I ask too much)

About your other project STT16bit I got an issue with a specific level, unable to beat the game. Issue is open on github, could you please take a look ?

@besk
Thank you, works good!..

Btw how to do the 4:3 display aspect ratio, instead of incorrect widescreen?.. It's stretched out without any proper proportions for now. :(

I tried running it at 60 fps, but the results weren't great; the game's code was designed for 30 fps, so it breaks a few things, though I might take another look at it later. I'll also be releasing an update for Sonic Triple Trouble soon :)

I'm trying to bring both the 4:3 setting and true widescreen support in the next update :)

Thank you so much for all of your Sonic ports, they are fantastic! I always wanted to try Sonic R on my Switch but the retroarch core for Saturn ran terribly, so this is a great opportunity

Since you mentioned updating this and Sonic Triple Trouble, would it be alright to request a feature for Advance 2? I want to request a retry button for both regular stages and special stages if possible.

Thank you! Special Stage 6 is quite challenging so having to re-do a full run of Techno Base, SP Rings and all, just to have another shot was driving me insane lol

Any chance you'd be willing to port the advance 1 decomp too?

Also, some bosses in advance 2 have corrupted graphics, like the final boss missing most of its sprites.
This is true. The boss where you rescue Knuckles has bugged graphics that cover a good chunk of the screen. Egg Utopia is also bugged, but as Neoname said the final boss of Zone XX is missing almost all of its sprites, obstacles included. It's basically unbeatable

Would this theoretically be compatible with the Dreamcast version, assuming the server host in between the clients is running on PC?
