I just bought sonic mania (retail) today. when I went to redeem coins, a message popped up saying that it's too early to redeem coins for this title. I bought captain toad along with it. do I have to wait so many days or something? does this title even have coins?
I noticed this too with Sonic Mania as well as Shaq Fu. I remember trying to redeem the coins on Shaq Fu every day for about a week with no success. I tried again about a month later and it worked.
my concern here is if best buy broke the street date or something, then I was banned for playing a game early due to best buy's mistake. I'm going legit with the switch, so that would piss me off.

I highly doubt you would get banned by playing the game early. Nintendo is well aware that retailers can break street dates and it's not the consumers fault. I got Mario Tennis 2 days early from some independent game store and they always break the street date. Never an issue.
There's no ban risk if you get a physical game earlier, what happened with pokémon sun/moon is that most of banned folks used a CIA (installable version) of the leaked game and used the online services of said game way earlier. It was easy to nintendo do a cross reference to detected those who used a installable version without using a reviewer code to download the game.
But I'm baffled that even almost a week after the launch Nintendo won't let you redeem the golden coins for the game.
I had this problem with another game (might've been mega man legacy collection 1). it was a somewhat recent purchase. legacy collection 2 went through without a problem. when I went to swap carts, I did check sonic mania again, and I still got that error message. has anyone managed to get this to work with sonic mania?
