I see threads from time to time where people say that the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Pro Controller fixes the d-pad. What was wrong with the d-pad in the first place?

It is imprecise. If you push on the right side (far away from center) and put too much pressure up or down on it, you end up triggering that up or down direction. For games that need fast and accurate inputs it's absolutely abysmal.
