Gaming So any fix for BOTW Wii U lag?

So does it make a difference moving the game to internal storage instead of USB? Also didn't know that the change of resolution would help...

Apparently the v1.1 update (or v33 depending where you look) does help frame rate drops in certain places on WiiU. I know that there've been only a few occasions where lag has spiked, and that's usually when there are lots of particle effects around (mist, glowy things, grass, rain, etc). Easily playable when running off internal HDD.
No it doesn't. It added DLC support and that's it.

No but unless it's placebo, I think if you play on the gamepad it actually does drop the rendering resolution and it feels like the framerate is much more consistent as a result.

I think the worst "lag" or to be more precise delay is with the reaction time of a horse when one needs to change directions quickly and this is unrelated to the FPS.
And then it runs into a wall or an enemy and throws me off its back, absolutely fantastic as chef uwe would say it.
I have finished the game and I only noticed a huge amount of lag when fighting a moblin and then hitting it with a weapon I threw.
Otherwise there are small hiccups at times which aren't nice but acceptable imo.

The horse thing is by design, it even says in one of the loading screen tips that handling of the horse is slower the faster it goes. They also turn slower when the bond is low

I actually attempted to measure the frame rate differences between TV and gamepad mode, and it seems the rendering resolution is the same internally because the frame rate is consistent between both modes, but it looks smoother in gamepad mode because the screen is smaller. The jumps between one frame and the next are more apparent the larger the screen is, because the distance an object moves is larger, assuming it's not being watched at an optimal distance.

Wii U version is always going to have the lag it has. The game is too intensive to stay 100% fluid on the Wii U. For the switch however, turning off WiFi will remove most to all lag, and Nintendo will be issuing a system update soon to patch the issue so you don't have to turn off the WiFi for the Switch.
I've been playing for the past few days without wifi, and there has been no difference whatsoever with frame drops and stuttering. I think Nintendo is full of it.

Weird, I'm not lying when I say I've had next to no frame drops, and have seen no stuttering since turning off wifi on my Switch while playing Breath of the Wild. And I've played for hours since doing so.

Well, what method did you use to disable WiFi? I first tried just deleting my connection settings, but when nothing changed, I then changed "auto-connect" to off in the connection settings while also enabling airplane mode. Is it that you've been playing in portable mode? Because there are almost no frame drops at all in portable mode (WiFi or not), and even when there are, it's slight and just for a fraction of a second. It could be that I just haven't sufficiently disabled WiFi.

An idea would be to try to find and delete / replace shader files for added fullscreen effects if these exist. Or find a way to reduce / remove the shadows. Maybe there is also a config file hidden somewhere, allowing to change graphical settings.

Another option would be finding Actionreplay-like cheat codes to modify the internal resolution or to switch certain graphical effects on or off, even though these would be very hard to find. But there must be memory addresses that control these settings, since the game uses a dynamic resolution engine.

Is the game based on Unreal engine (Nintendo said they mastered it) ? This information could help to locate the files to modify but I am not a game designer and have no idea.

Removing completely the shadow would break a couple of quests relying on it. And since the resolution is not fixed, like you pointed out, in really slow scenes the resolution is already pretty low, getting lower would totally break the game.
