If you use Snapchat, then your username along with your phone number is most likely on the web.
A group of hackers (no, not you who call yourself a hacker for knowing your boy/girlfriend fb password; neither you who uses an exploit to run roms/isos on your console) had found a hole in the security of Snapchat and used it to get YOUR username along with YOUR phone number..
Altough no pictures were leaked, and the last 2 digits of your phone number are censored, this was an effort from hackers to raise awareness in something:
No matter what social network/messaging app/ internet provider/ security you use, your information is NOT safe!
We live in a digital era where we are all vulnerable...
Happy New Year :P!!

Who puts their phone number on social media? I don't because privacy.
you may not have to. since its an app on the phone it may be an exploit capable of getting the number from elsewhere on the device

I'm sorry for those people, but you've got to be careful what you post on the net. Once it's on a shared network, anyone can access it. Unless you're the ultimate hacker that can protect from all methods of privacy invasion.

Idiots/morons/dipshits, that's who. I'm glad you're not like that.

Well i didnt used the app until i knew about this, i downloaded it and after you finish setting up your account it asks you to "sync" your number with the app to look for friends who might have the app too... So thats when they get your phone number

And that's why I don't use Snapchat.

Besides, the icon looks like a tissue. And I'm pretty sure Snapchat isn't used for its intended purpose.

I fail to understand how whenever an entire database is leaked, my data is never in there. The sceptic in me would like to believe none of the data is ever real.

Never heard of the service (not unsurprising)... *looks it up*.
And people believe that is how computers work?

Snapchat is a phone application. As vavanui8 said; people are not posting their mobile device information online. Internally, snapchat uses the mobile number as an identification tool in which it's automatically extracted from the phone.

I wasn't affected, but I found my ex's girlfriends phone number and the guy she cheated on me with phone number too.

Me: What is Adam's last two cell phone digits
Her: YY
Me: Oh snaps it's true, snapchat got hacked and Adam's phone number is XXX-XXXX-XYY

My god, it's so easy to manipulate to get information!

Well, thank God you clarified that. For a second there I was confused.
