Hardware smash breaking thumbpads?

Nintendo did this deliberately to accelerate the rate at which you need to buy a new 3DS system.

They did a similar thing with Mario Kart DS, the drifting mechanic was designed to wear down your D-Pad so that you are forced to buy a new system earlier than normal.

It is nothing new, they seem to be doing it with at least one game on every generation of handhelds.

You're... fucking kidding, right?

Good god, just take responsibility for your careless handling of your gaming systems/controllers. Seriously. I've been playing Melee, Brawl, and Project M with the very same GameCube controller from 2004, and it still works like a charm. I've put roughly 35 hours into Smash 3DS so far (combined between the demo and the actual game). Before that, I put over 100 hours into Kid Icarus: Uprising, which is arguably even rougher on the circle pad than Smash is (to be fair, that was mostly on my original 3DS before trading in for an XL, but that's still near 100 hours without issue).

My brother is the same way with the 360 controllers he uses to play CoD. Two of the four are dead, one of the remaining has a left bumper that only responds half the time, and both have thumbsticks literally worn down to the hard plastic. That's not the result of a "game designed to ruin your system/controller," that's just flat-out carelessness and rough play.

Believe it or not, HITTING THAT HARD ON THE CONTROLLER ISN'T GOING TO MAKE YOU PLAY BETTER, and you can play just as swiftly and instantly with much softer button taps. It just takes a bit of self-control.

Calm down he was joking. But some friends and I have gone through a few PS3 Afterglows playing fighting games.

Nope. I really don't understand why, either. Brawl allowed you to use the dpad on the Wiimote just fine.

Well, that's the nail in the coffin for me. I'll just wait for the Wii U version before I touch it. It's not that I'm afraid of breaking my analog stick, it's just it feels too floaty for me. Though I only played the demo.

Yeah, there's "(un)intentional flaws in a system" and then there's "manhandling the system because l337360proNoScopeWomboComboSuprSp33d". The system's been around for years and all of a sudden it's Smash's fault that your circle pad falls off? No. You're just playing the game like an angry gorilla.

People are just really stupid if they can't realise that the Slidepad's are fragile and regardless of how much force you'll use it won't be recognised, this doesn't have any kind of a sensor within the Slidepad.

Anyway, the real Smash Bros. game is coming out on November/December so I'll wait until then.

Meanwhile at Nintendo
*breaks circle pad*
F**k it if they break circle pad they will buy new 3ds

Everythings wears down while being used.
Smash bros increase the rate heavily. Mainly because it is a fighting game.
Which requires a player to react fast and lots inputs.

The buttons wear down by several ways:
1. High pressure
2. Duration of strain

High pressure are generated by pressing hard with the thumbstick, but the same force can be generated FAST tapping the thumbstick for smash attack. Combined of those will wear down the stick.
Playing SSB for very long gives the thumbstick lots of strain.

Apparently you can hardmod a 3DS to use a gamecube controller for only like $14 if you have a little experience with electronics. I'm sure many smash players would prefer this anyway. Then again, you could just wait until Wii U. I plan to hardmod my standard 3DS when the New XL comes out.

The breaking of the thumb pad is the one reason I never got the one for the 3DS. I want to play it but I couldn't help but play the way I play and I play with absolute presicion and I don't think I could change it so better not to risk it. Strange they would do it since the N64, the Gamecube and the Wii could all take it.

Hitting the stick/pad hard enough to make it break has nothing to do with precision...

I'm not trying to be inflammatory, but really, how does hitting hard increase your precision?

Perhaps I said it wrong. I do hit the thumb pad a lot more on the Gamecube and N64 and the way I do it the 3DS wouldn't be able to handle it. I could even feel it when playing the demo. I think it's basically how I play but I can't exactly help it.
