Gaming Sleep Mode Problem

Whenever I set my laptop to sleep mode, it...
The screen will turn off like it normally does, but the lights don't, and you can hear the fan and HDD still go on. I tried to leave it on like that for a while but it still didn't go off. The only thing I could do was to hold the power button, but that's pointless for sleep mode.

I have a Gateway NV59, I reinstalled Windows 7 to purge all the Futureshop-installed-for-you crud.

How do I get sleep mode to work?

A - Run windows update and get all the hardware (driver) updates, then restart.

B - Install all the drivers from gateway's site.

C - Hunt out the individual driver updates from the sites of the companies that made the individual parts (especially the motherboard).
