Would it be possible for a single player Four Swords hack to be made, or something that would allow people to play the game with out other people?

Yeah, you'd have to somehow hack in a new AI for the other players. That'd be hard in the best of conditions, but near impossible with a ROM hack.

Best you can do is to play the game with no$gba, which supports multi-player linking. You'll need to have different controls setup for player 2 of course, and it might get rather difficult, especially with the boss battles.

Wouldn't it be possible to make it so that one player can switch between controlling the different links like in FSA for the GCN? Or hack the dungeons to only need one Link, or something like TMC?

You could always make some friends and have an enjoyable time playing the game how it was meant to be played

But yeah the no$gba option is your best bet.

Naw. Plaing with friends? That wouldn't work.

But seriously. Four Swords would be no fun at all on your own. It's a multiplayer game.

failing the fact that a hack for single player would be difficult, is there anyway to access the secret dungeon in ALTTP without playing the four swords game? as i know a key is needed but have found no other way of obtaining it.

The game is playable on vbalink, not in no$gba (it crashes). Just follow the instructions on the webpage.
Only downside is that the other player can see your screen, but it's no big deal. In fact, you can play it over LAN to remedy this, but since I don't have two PCs on the same room, it's no use.

Not really. The game, by design, involves many puzzles that require both players to be active at the same time. You can't just leave the second player standing at the entrance gate, as you'll find areas that you must have both players cooperate to get past.
