Well is it? Lets find out.
PLOT
The film is set in 1954 where two U.S marshals investigate the disappearance of a patient from a mental hospital for the criminally insane. Such an eerie, satisfying subject based on the book by Dennis Lehane.
THE FILM
it was in such a confusing state of mind, a lot of the scenes didn’t fit together, and it was filled with over the top suspense. In about the first five minutes of the film, loud, electrifying fifties music plays indicating that something scary is about to happen. It plays for at least a couple of minutes, and when it finally stops, they’re just entering the property of the mental institution. This comes about numerous times in the film. This wants you to believe something stimulating is about to occur and while it does a nice job of that but it's to cliche, nothing really is shocking. Some prospects will have you guessing. And that’s either because you’re confused, or interested. But before half of the film is over, you’ve pretty much figured out what’s going to happen. I don’t want to give any spoilers away but in one scene when there’s a small note that reads “who is 67?” out of 66 prisoners held at the organization, it all comes together. It’s great and all that everything makes sense now, but only about half an hour through the movie. Generally, the movie does keep you wondering. But that’s only because it’s so complex, and puzzling. When it came close to the end, I felt that certain scenes would conclude the film and maybe I’d change my mind, based on the ending. No, i'm not saying this happed only 2 times This happened several times, yep you read that right, SEVERAL times where I thought it would end, when really they seemed to drag it out forever. However, there’s a quote in the film that I do think will go down as a famous line. But that’s because it’s repeated, and when you finally realize what it means, it actually IS riveting. It feels good to know. But sadly, it’s one of the only memorable scenes.
Martin Scorsese is a pretty good when it comes to film making, and I’m not the only one who thinks so. It’s filled with great actors and it has such a good marketing tool. Unluckily, I think we’ve found his first slump. I’m sure many people will observe and like this film, but if you happen to be reading this and have not yet seen this film and have been thinking about doing so, do yourself a favor and do not do it. It might be a good idea to rent or pirate, considering it’s such a debatable movie. You will either be baffled or amazed by the film. Unfortunately, it was an overconfident combination of generic and dull, it makes the lack of desire and excitement. Because in the end it just turned out to be a boring mishap.
