Aren't you still supposed to format before downgrading? (I haven't done one since before the CTRTransfer became a thing but I used the OG DSiWare method when you had to patch the NATIVE_FIRM on the PC) Just a guess but I've seen a lot of frankenfirms/soft bricks because people fail to format before/after the process. Pretty sure it's necessary to make sure you're working with a clean SD and clean NAND to avoid incompatibilities. You can totally soft-brick from having an SD card with bad sectors, or an edited HomeMenu etc etc.

Interesting both of my successful installs were on brand new devices, so they were as if they were just formatted... Hmmm, aren't those bricks caused in downgrade tho?

yeah looks like its another a9lh brick, i did identify what seemed to be the cause of a bricked console for someone else basically for a few seconds of the process your 3DS is in a dodgy position where the keystore is tweaked, the system then soft resets and finishes the install, its at this point where a random ill timed free can result in a brick, but yeah a nand backup and hardmod will get you back up and running

Does this mean OTPless is more risky then the old way of a N3dsxl Mod

each have their own pitfalls, really the 3DS shouldnt freeze during this soft reset, but obviously not everything in this world is guaranteed especially when running code via exploits, but i think otpless has less pitfalls and less points off failure than the old method

there was more bricks from the old method, but with them being spread out across 3 different points for it to fail it didn't seem as bad, hopefully what is causing the freeze can be identified though, but it could just be a hardware glitch as a previous console i unbricked ran the otpless install fine the second time with the exact same SD etc so its obviously not just BAD SD = FAIL!
