Hello GBAtemp! Okay, so I tried looking for the solution on this on the Internet, to no avail. My problem is with SaltySD and Smash-Selector.

Some time ago, I had SSB4 mods on my New3DS and had no problem using them, both offline and online. After a while, I stopped playing and forgot about mods. Today, I was trying to get them working again, I did everything I could to get them back.
Realizing that they are actually lame (and after lots and lots of failed attempts), I decided to download a new, bigger modpack, moving the old one to my computer. I tried applying mods to sm4sh with Smash-Selector and without it, but it just wasn't working! With Smash-Selector the game was super slow, taking minutes to load a battle, and the mods weren't even there. Without it (I copied the modpack to F:\saltysd\smash\ and even deleted Smash-selector for this), it wasn't working at all. I then tried doing it both ways at the same time (had the modpack in both F:\saltysd\smash and F:\saltysdMODS\Slot_1) and it still didn't work and was slow.

I figured that the slowness was caused by the size of the modpack (over 500 megabytes), so I tried making my own modpack, starting from 1 reskin. I did it with Smash-selector at first, but it didn't work. The slowness was there, and the reskin wasn't. Then I did the both-ways-at-once thing again and... the mod was there!

..But with it was the immense slowness. Again, having just 1 reskin and waiting several minutes for a battle to start is too much, especially when you want to play online. I got frustrated, for the millionth time already, deleted Smash-selector, had the modpack in both places *just in case*, and it still didn't work! It was fast (normal fast) but with no mods.

In the end, the only thing that worked was having the modpack in both F:\saltysd\smash and F:\saltysdMODS\Slot_1 and still having Smash-selector with SaltySD enabled. Despite working and being wifi-safe, this method made it impossible to play online because of the loding times. I didn't even try doing it, it's that bad.

I tried making an empty modpack for smash-selector and just having SaltySD enabled, and it did work, but with the same slowness. Also, a year back when I had mods and didn't have trouble, I was using the non-Smash-selector way of having them. Basically, I had three packs (normal smash, Turbo mode smash and just a Mod pack) in my F:\saltysd\ directory, renamed to F:\saltysd\smash, F:\saltysd\smashTU and F:\saltysd\smashPAC. Everytime when I wanted to change a pack, I would rename the folder to smash or smashXXX (with X's being letters to name the pack), and the one with just "smash" would load up. I had Smash-selector then, but wasn't using it as it wasn't working for me. Not to mention, the rename method doesn't work for me now :I

My SD card is Transcend Premium 300x 64 Gigs, and I was using it back then and it wasn't slow.

Halp!
