Hacking Running old wii software version

Hi I am sure this has been covered but searching hasn't yielded anything(probably not using a good collection of terms). I have a wii that hasn't been turned on, and so of course not updated, in probably 6 or 7 months. I've not messed around with any homebrew or anything at all. So I am wondering if its ok to install the current homebrew channel and the backup launcher .3 beta on such an "old" wii software version?
