Hey, I was here a while back and recently got my own Wii U...Saying this is my own Wii U and not another person's Wii, things are a bit different. I was wondering how to run most apps using this method on this page.

Installation - Newer Installation Guide

I'm guessing I add the files and swap the boot.elf, causing the smashstack to run the boot.elf to another program? And what programs can I run without effecting the other files on my Wii U? I mainly want to use this for emulators to run ROM hacks, and ROM hacks for normal Wii games. No homebrew really. I would try to do this normally, but like it says I don't want to be the target when I have a Wii with homebrew on it.

So I'm pretty much asking how to run NES/SNES/Genesis/GB/GBA/Other Emulated games on the Wii U with this method, and if it will effect anything other than the files on the SD card, and if so, can I use the Wii U gamepad as a TV screen with said programs?

Well, I know you can run riivolution by using smash stack and you don't need HBC, but i'm unsure as to how you run emulators. My guess would be that you just use smash stack along with the boot.elf file of your program.

Using SmashStack to run emulators is fine. It's just homebrew that use AHBPROT access that you'd need the HBC installed for and those are usually just things to check settings or make further modifications to the system software which you don't seem like you'd be needing so as long as you don't want to be playing GC/Wii game backups, you should be just fine running a disk based exploit every time.

So pretty much swapping the .elf files between Riivolution and something like WiiMednafen will work? And how can I tell whether a program uses AHBPROT? Other than that and the question with the gamepad thing, which I'm mainly assuming is a yes, thanks for the help.

Swapping the .elf files shold work fine.
Typically, only programs which alter the system use AHBPROT. If you're interested in emulators, you won't have an issue.
They have a line which reads "<no_ios_reload/>" in the meta.xml file provided, if you're interested.

Yes, you can just swap out the ELF file. (The only tricky part is finding an ELF instead of a DOL but since people started off by using this same method during the first month after Wii U's launch, before HBC came out for it, and people kept linking ELF files at the time because of it, I don't think there'd be TOO much trouble getting a hold of them.)

Pretty much anything that needs AHBPROT access will tell you as soon as you try to run it and it sees it doesn't have access. Emulators don't need it, though.

As far as the gamepad, there should be no problem using it as a TV

Ah, thank you. I guess that'll pretty much be everything! Might start trying this out soon, saying I wanted to try out a lot of ROM hacks for the Gamecube via the SD media launcher, but got the Wii U instead...So I guess I'm getting the best of both worlds now!

Edit: So pretty much look through the posts around here for a .elf file for WiiMed if it doesn't include one? Glad I don't have to be alone with these questions...

On the note of finding .elfs instead of .dols, if an application doesn't seem to have a .elf version available, you can run some basic homebrew launcher (Loadmii is a basic example) and then launch your .dol from there. If you're going to be using several different emulators, it might be a good idea to use a loader as your boot.elf so you do not have to keep changing it on your computer.

That's why I would be using WiiMed. Something I can swap easily between. Even if that wasn't available, I wouldn't mind swapping .elf files.

ROM HACKS are different from plain Roms. You can't get Super Mario Star Road on the Wii U eShop can you? That's an example. I am using it for games which were modified alot, like Mario Adventure. Not a real Nintendo game, just something modified a LOT.

As an update from your previous post and the fact that WiiMed doesn't currently have an .elf file that I could find, I'm assuming since there's no meta.xml file that AHBPROT isn't used in LoadMii? Or is there a .elf file for the WiiMed that I just seemed to miss?

Neither LoadMii nor WiiMed use AHBPROT, as far as I know.
And I can't find a .elf version of WiiMednafen.

So after seeing some videos, it looks like I just get the files on an SD card, run SmashStack to LoadMii, and select the program I want to use?

Anyways, thank you! After this question I'll pretty much be finished.

Well I'm pretty much done with the info I need, but hey, it's OK. Maybe you can look some up, there's plenty to find. It's the next best thing to buying a cart which runs the roms directly on the system if you can't afford them.

I agree when I use my flash cart its mostly for games I can't afford but but plan to buy later on :)

I went today and looked at a motorcycle someone was selling. I get there and the battery on it was dead, so the guy grabbed a battery charger and hooked it up. He plugged it into the wall, and the motorcycle sparked and started smoking. Come to find out the bike uses a 6 volt battery and the guy had the charger set to 12v. I said sorry to the dude and walked away. I felt bad for him tho.
