Rumour: Wii U Can Use More Than One Controller

This was inevitable, one WiiU controller for one WiiU console only would make the release of the console itself rather useless, with only one person getting the benefit of playing with a screen on their controller in 2 player co-op games.

i would't really complain if the price of the wii u controller of was 100+ if it is good and touch screen is good , i mean you get a camera , touch screen , i highly doubt it will be cheap. Tho i think that the wii u and two controllers might come in a bundle after the wii u is released, just like the ps3 bundle pack which had ps3 and two controllers and 2 games which costed like 900 dollars -___-

They'll probably be $60 each. That's the price of a normal controller for a system this generation. I still think it's too high, though.

You know what guys? It can even cost $100 as far as I'm concerned. I'd still buy a whole set of 4.

Why? Well, you buy a controller only once, and think of all the fun it will give you on split-screen parties, or whenever someone hops in. It's got so many fun features in it that it could be conscidered a separate "console", 4 rounds of checkers at once in every room in your house, anyone?

I really, really don't mind the price. I just want Nintendo to add support to multiple controllers and I'll be happy with it.

I seriously doubt that the screen was added "a few weeks before E3". You don't just add a screen, a lot of work goes into something like this. Manufacturing needs to change, development tools needs to be revamped. It's not something you just throw on a controller and then everything just works.

The only "big" problem regarding multiple controller would be that the system would need to render potentially different scenes for each connected controller. The actual streaming I can't see would cause problems, that is, if all controllers received the same rendering.

As in it was just a screen before but they decided to add touch features.

Agreed! You can get a fairly decent, entry level Android tablet from China for 82 dollars. NONE of the tech in the Wii U controller is cutting edge. I wouldn't be surprised if controllers were between 60-70 dollars.

3x Wiimote ($30 each) + 3x Nunchuck ($20 each) + 4x WiiMotion Plus ($25 each) + 4x Classic Controller ($20 each) OR 4x Gamecube Controller ($10 each wired, $20 for the WaveBirds) = $330 OR $290 OR $330.

3x a $100 WiiU controller that features all the functions of the above controllers and more = $300

...and those are CURRENT prices, at the Wii launch this stuff was more expensive then now. Think about that.

I fail to see the problem. It'd still be a $30 steal in most cases, unless you'd buy the forementioned hardware re-furbed.

You mean a no-name Android tablet with severe lag problems, barely any processing power and generally crap built quality versus top-notch, branded tech, you do realize that it's like comparing a 20-inch Sony television set with a 30-inch "Shwang-hua-poop" set with built-in "stereewo saunt"?

Apparently Michael Patcher says Fils-Aime told him that it can officially support two controllers.

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has told IGN that Nintendo's new console can support more than one controller. He states that he got the information direct from Reggie Fils-Aime, President of Nintendo of America.

"They were particularly unclear about whether the console would support more than one of their tablet-like controllers; Mr. Miyamoto said no, but Reggie said yes (to me in a meeting)," said Pachter. "Obviously, they intend to ship the console with only one of these controllers, so it is unlikely that anyone will develop games that require two, but they were not clear whether the capability exists."

A few days ago, IGN reported that Nintendo's Wii U would likely support a single controller, with Miyamoto saying that the "basic premise is that you can use one with a system".

However, he did say that they were "doing research about if someone brings their controller to their friend's house and they want to play together on Wii U to whether or not something like that would be possible."

not even my atari was bundled with 2 controllers, nor my nes or snes ect all had 1 as far as I remember.

When was that? The Atari's/Speccys etc didn't, The NES, SNES, Master System, Megadrive, PS, N64, etc didn't. Actually none of the systems I've owned have come with 2 pads unless it was a special bundle. And usually a store one.

wait, I have to correct you on that. They now sell Wiimote with MotionPlus built in for $40, and those accessories are much cheaper than you describe. Also what is the point of buying 4 wiiMotion Plus and classic controllers if you only have 3 Wiimotes? Not to mention that I'm pretty sure the Wii doesn't support Gamecube controllers, though I could be wrong. So it would look more like this:
4xWiimoteMotionPlus ($40/each) + 4xNunchuck ($10) + (4x Classic ($10/each) OR (4xGC Controller ($10/each) OR 4xGC Wireless Controller ($20/each))
This would amount to $240 with classic or wired Gamecube, or $280 with wireless Gamecube, which is slightly different.

In any event, I don't think the Wii U controllers can do EVERYTHING a Wiimote can do, but certainly some of it. And I don't think the controller will cost $100...

You clearly missed my point. I used prices straight from Gamestop for "New" hardware, and even if they are high in your opinion, they were even higher while these accessories were launched. I didn't count WiiMote Plus'es in my little calculation because they're quite a recent "invention".

And yes, one WiiMote and one Nunchuck are bundled, hence we're buying only 3.

My *point* was that even if the controller would cost $100 at launch, it wouldn't be a horrible tragedy.

Plus, not only it does everything the above controllers do, it actually does *more* due to additional hardware.

i haven't played local multiplayer in a long time, usually play online.

*facepalm'd* AT LAUNCH. PRICES AT LAUNCH. How many times does this have to be typed? At the console's launch, the WiiMotes and Nunchucks were pricy. At launch of MotionPlus, it was pricy. If you want to utilize the Wii to its finest (retro games), you NEED classic controllers. Nothing in my estimate is "useless".

And if you're arguing that you don't need 4 sets of controllers, just cut the estimate in half price-wise - it's not like it matters. The estimate could be for 1 set and the result will be the same - pretty much the same ammount of cash spent.
