It have been organizing my collection of console games and such and a thought came to me. What makes a ROM and ROM and an ISO an ISO?

Is the extension?
The console it is played on?

Just wondering because it is an interesting thing.

ROMs are generally cartridge based. They're named ROMs because they are ripped from the Read Only Memory.

ISOs are disk based. They're named ISOs because generally CD-ROM disks used the ISO...9660 file system if I remember correctly, however nowadays there are 2 or 3 more different file systems. But we just stuck with ISO.

Can we get a few more people to say the exact same thing in a slightly different way?
We wont understand otherwise.

Thanks.

Happens in every other thread, so why not this one? Like seriously, go look at any other stupid question thread in the 3DS section or any of the flashcard sections and you'll see 2 pages of people repeating the same answer.

ROM = Read -Only Memory, backups where ROM chips store game data, used on cartridges
ISO = International Organization for Standardization, is a optical disc image

If it comes from a CD-ROM or a DVD-ROM...it's called an image. Not to be confused with pictures, obviously. Or with roms. As such, 'image' is abbreviated to 'iso'.

'Rom', on the other hand, is an abbreviation of "Data From Cartridge". The reason it's not called DFC is because the guy who first manages it thought it would be cool to pick other letters to make up for the abbreviation. So it's not "Data From Cartridge" but "data fROM cartridge".

...and if you believe any of the above, you should go slap yourself in the face until it makes sense. :P
