Hacking Riivolution for backups

Congrats. But like I said, some are.

thats pretty cool like u said that they are able to block some things even nintendo cant. but my wiikey2 im pretty sure is the most widely used and best selling hardware mod for wii. atleast until *ode's came out.

thx btw i like learnding. lol didnt realize riivoloution even tried to block Modchips

But it's not that hard to keep discs in good condition. If a disc gets broken it's the owner's fault, or rather not the company's. chaosdarkneo said his brother broke the disc, which was either malicious, or a result of improper handling (left on the floor or something). It's not Nintendo's responsibility to replace it.
It is Nintendos fault for not allowing it to be handled properly.
Because proper handling of ANY data that is worth something includes making a backup.
You know...those little plastic thingumies that nintendo provides...they hold the disc, the manual and some commercial garbage...kinda looks like this...

Well...you're not supposed to throw it away.

Nice oneliner on the handling of data. I absolutely agree with it. Just not on who's job it is.

It was in the case. He was mad at me and took it out, snapped it in two, and left it on the ground for me to find.

Oh well, seeing as Riivolution doesn't work with backups now, and might never will, I might as well get a new copy.

I completely agree with it being the owner's responsibility.

I just wish I actually had money to spend... Oh well...

If you wanted to use a burned backup of the game you could trick riivolution into thinking it was a normal game if you installed one of those full cIOS mods that replaces every IOS. However, I don't think there is a current version and that method is generally seen as unsafe etc.

I haven't actually explored XNEEK, but it might also be able to trick riivolution into thinking a real game was loaded in the drive (even from usb).
Hmm...don't take it the wrong way, but I think vou have no idea what you're talking about. The whole reason riivolution doesn't work with backups is because it doesn't work with non-standard IOS'es. Installing more cIOS'es won't suddenly change that simple fact.

Neek is the exact same thing: it doesn't use original IOS'es* so riivolution won't work on them.

I see I misunderstood what the problem was. Since riivolution doesn't like cIOS period I guess it won't work. I just remember that you could get any disc loading app that wasn't originally designed to load backups to load one with a cIOS in all normal IOS slots.

I'd gladly do that if it'd make Riivolution work with backups, but it wouldn't work at all.

Riivolution apparently specifically checks for a good IOS58 (or some IOS) and forces you to install a legit copy.

To my knowledge, the wii is a game console, and part of the people manipulating it are kids.
So, they should consider the fact that game discs can become damaged.
I can understand that they don't allow backup's for piracy, but I do feel they should provide a method to replace a damaged disc.
The cost of the disc is maybe 1% of the cost of the game. It's the software you are paying for, and not the media that is used to store it.
So, it's not normal you have to pay for the software again because its carrier got broken. They shouldn't do it for free, but letting you pay
the whole fee again is not a client friendly solution.

Nintendo can't be responsible for replacing every Wii disc anyone breaks. That would cost them a clean fortune. I can see where you're coming from, but if you buy something, it's up to you to look after it and keep it in good condition.

have you ever heard of craftsman hand tools? you buy them and then you can do whatever you want with them. if you break them, you just take them back to the store and they give you a new one right off the shelf. no receipt, no proof of purchase. theyve been doing that for decades and it hasnt put them out of business. the method is simple. they jack the price of the tool up to cover 2 or 3 replacements.

i think nintendo can get away with this same strategy. a new disc would be a few cents. they can jack up the price of a game enough to cover 10 replacements and only add a dollar or two to the final price.

It's great when companies do replace their products for free, but I think it's foolish to EXPECT a company to. I certainly don't think it would hurt Nintendo one bit to give replacement discs, provided a broken disc is sent to them, but it not their responsibility to. Nintendo provides the means to protect it from all but mishandling and ill intention. I don't have so much as a scratch on the great majority of my games.

When you put it like that, yeah I guess it makes sense. Considering almost no one should need 10 replacements, and most people probably won't need any (people without angry siblings who snap discs :P ), factoring in the price for 10 replacements should be plenty to ensure an "unlimited" supply of replacements. And I guess a couple of dollars/pounds/euros/chickens/whatever extra isn't too much to pay for the knowledge you will never need to shell out for a replacement copy.

Yes, there are many reasons. Most of all is that the team does not want to be related to any type of piracy. They are certainly a professional team that does not want to be associated with any type of piracy... and I don't blame them.

There is no reason why anyone wanting to play their mod that can't go out and pay for the real retail game.

It is their choice, and is the pirates don't like it then fuck them and the pirates can make something of their own...... Oh, the ungrateful pirates are incapable, then really, tough shit. Out of all the games that people can pirate, they will be heart broken to buy one good game to be able to play 2 real games? Pirates don't deserve what this team has given.

I'm completely grateful, and if it's pirating to play a backup of a game that you own, then I'm afraid the moral gray-area has been crossed :/

I can understand their stance on piracy.

I completely support it.

But, my brother is a monster...

I'll respect the team's decision to block backups as well. I'll just have to get some money to buy a new game :/

I fought this before, and I never had any proof that they actually fought against backup, but that they only supported legitimate discs.

Either way, no one has any reason to argue with them. They make the choice for their software.

I'll be damned if anyone can bully Microsoft into anything.... besides the law.

EDIt: I'm sorry, apparently this message offended someone!

I wasn't trying to be inconsiderate or ungrateful.

I was just wondering if it was okay for me to do that.

Please forgive me, devs of Riivolution...

I don't pirate my games, thank you very much. I was wondering out of pure curiosity. I guess I could use SNEEK/UNEEK and have SSBB as a folder where I can just replace the audio/texture files.

Go ahead and try it. It won't work. Riivolution won't ever get to the point of it launching a game because *neek patches every IOS so riivolution will want to download a new IOS37, but that will be patched also.... so you won't get very far.

He means actually replacing the files in the extracted disc format that *NEEK uses, and loading them normally with *NEEK. You know how you need to use DiscEx to extract the discs onto the SD card or USB drive? He means just going into those extracted folders and replacing the files. Not using riivolution at all.

I think it will might work depending on the package. It worked for me for fatal frame 4 (loaded using cfg but *neek should work too).
As long as only files are replaced it should work for other packages too.
If it does in memory patching that will have to be converted to a cheat instead. Might be hard to do but should be possible.
