@Azel, or @Slasher115, could you add that to the first post, please?
I need to catch up on the thread lol

I'd do it, but using mainly cias, I'm kind of stupid with 2.5hax stuff, I need to understand it and post an 100% clear run down because if I don't get it being a noob xxxhax user, chances are that newcomer wont.

Lemme get this to work myself first and I'll edit it :)

(any chance @aliaspider spider would down the line consider including the a general xml with 3dsx releases ? and a readme-fba-mame2003 ?)

(boy, what did I wish for...this thread is going to turn into a nightmare of ppl trying to run the latest mame rom on mame 2003, or asking how to run things fullspeed on it :x)

@kiwiis Thanks for the Japanese YouTube ID, that wasn't on the list I checked. I've edited my post with the XML file to add it.

I'm guessing from the fact that you were trying to specifically use YouTube that you don't have any of the Monster Hunter 4G or Smash Bros. games or demos to use instead?

EDIT: Monster Hunter 4 (non-G, the original Japanese game) and Monster Hunter 3G/U might also be serviceable candidates if you've got either of those. If anyone is able to run FBA and MAME under those titles, do let me know and I'll add them to the XML.

GPSP (latest nightly build) doesn't work now for Crash Bandicoot. Although the sound is very smooth and there is no lag, the game crashes randomly and the audio goes all buggy too.

(Don't know if this matters but, the game crashes with the audio set to disabled as well.)
Looks like the Golden Sun games are not the only one that are broken.
You're using cias. Right?

You can call me Holmes. Sherlock Holmes.

MAME doesn't seem to load CPS3,well?
The build of Mame that retroarch uses was prior to the CPS3 encryption being properly cracked - it's why the .139 romset is a better choice than the .78 set because it was more compatible by .139. It's also why there's some pretty big CHD's for CPS3 in Mame, as that was how it handled the encryption. The CHD's are irrelevant, as far as encryption tables are concerned, in later builds, and is another reason why FBA should be the 'go to' emulator for CPS3.

If I bother using Mame at all on my 3ds it will only be for pre-1990 games, as I know they'll predominantly run full speed.

@duwen There are a decent number of games which will run better on the MAME 0.78 core than the FBA one. A notable group are the Konami beat-'em-ups from the '90s. None of them seem to be full speed on FBA, but Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (the original TMNT, not Turtles in Time) and The Simpsons are both full speed, and the other games on similar hardware (Turtles in Time, X-Men, Sunset Riders) are marginally less slow. Sega System 16 games (e.g. Alien Syndrome, Cotton, Fantasy Zone, Golden Axe, Wonder Boy III) also seem to be a bit faster on MAME 2003 than FBA, but still not full speed from what I've tested.

FBA is definitely top-of-the-pile for performance when it comes to CPS and Neo Geo, but many of the "small-time" platforms are just ported from more recent versions of mainline MAME than 0.78, and as such run slower (but more accurately) than their MAME 2003 counterparts. It's kind of a bit of a crapshoot, though. If you're trying to play something which happens to run on both FBA and MAME and it's not running well enough, it's probably worth checking to see if the performance is better on the other core. In most cases, your ROMs won't be compatible across cores, though, so it's kind of a hassle.

Yeah, I totally agree. I've been a Mame user since it's inception, and I'll always use it for 'arcade classics', but for CPS1-3, Neogeo, Cave, and PGM FBA has been the better choice for a long while.

those konami beat em ups don't even work for me on FBA they not only crash FBA for me they also crash the whole 3ds and i have to reboot, they run fine on MAME though,
but i still can't figure our how to change players to the other characters

You'd probably need the two player versions of those games (X-Men, Simpsons, TMNT) to switch between characters.

i don't know i have no clue how it' supposed to work they are 4 player games but you can only select the 1st character there must be something in the settings to change it but i am afraid to screw around with the settings which are kind of vaguely labled
zr brings up a settings menu but i don't understand any of it and i'm not messing with it

@weatMod Yeah, on the original arcade machine you'd stand at the joystick of the character you wanted to be. That's why ArugulaZ is suggesting you get the 2-player versions of the games (separate clone ROMs) which have standard character selects.

There should be two player versions of the games, ie tmnt2p.zip. You'll need both that ROM (which is smaller) and the parent ROM (which contains the main files) to run them.

i know i have seen it but if it isa 2 player and the rom is 4 player that still makes no sense, how con you chose between one 4 players if it is only 2 player?
the settings menu must have a setting in it but it is a shit mess there are like a trillion settings in there and once you select a sub menu from the settings menu you can;t back up you just have to reset the whole thing

The four-player version is literally for four human persons standing in a row. In the real world, generally in a video game arcade. The number of human people standing in an arcade is not relevant to the number of characters programmed into a game.

In the four-player game, each of the four human persons choose a character by physically standing, in the real world, generally in an arcade, at the joystick assigned to the character they want to play as.

In the two-player version, players can choose within the game, using joystick movements, which of the characters they wish to play as.

ok i will try it, it's weird i can get the 4 player to change the coin inserted to the other characters but then i can;t figure out how to start it after that, but the "this game settings menu" has thousands of settings , i still feel there must be a way to change the "retropad 1" to another input

Worked fine for me...
...I got sidetracked by JoJo on CPS3... which works at a very decent fps - I'm getting full speed on title screen, and varying between 48 and full speed in game (3dsx version, xml'd through youtube, n3ds).
