Ok! I'll admit I'm a little slow but, I just discovered how well 1942 and 1943 run on the DS. Despite the vertical controls being a little akward to get used to, I haven't had that much fun on the DS for ages. The frame rates were smooth and the games ran great which amazed me for the DS.

The .nds files I found were both stand alone mame engines designed and cut down to run that game series only.

1942.nds

1942 (Revision B) 1942
1942 (Revision A) 1942a 1942
1942 (First Version) 1942b 1942
1942 (Williams Electronics license) 1942w 1942

1943.nds

1943: The Battle of Midway (US) 1943
1943: Midway Kaisen (Japan) 1943j 1943
1943 Kai: Midway Kaisen (Japan) 1943kai

I have heard of MarcoDS but 1943 isn't in the comatibility list and is one of my favorites. Besides, I prefer having the seprate .nds file and icon for each game.

There is also NeoDS. I havn't tried it but it looks pretty good in the youtube vidoes. I think there is a KOF and Metal Slug compilation pack for it that I might have to try.

Does anyone know if any other MAME games have been done in the same fashion as 1942 and 1943.nds?

Edit: just tried Metal Slug 4 and 5 and KOF 2003 on NeoDS and all I can say is "Fucken awseome." I can't believe this shit has been out for years and I have never tried it.
