I have a rog ally and a charging dock. It can output 1080p at 120hz. And 4k 60hz.

After doing some digging I discovered that 1440p, my ideal resolution, can only output at 60hz via charging docks. I’m curious why the refresh rate is so low when using a charging dock.

Mind you I’ve only become somewhat savvy regarding pc gaming over the past year, so sorry if this is a dumb question.

Also in general would I be correct in assuming 1080p 120 hz is for faster paced games. While 1440p 60hz would be better for something slower paced.

I would guess there is a maximum data rate your dock is capable of passing, and that 1440p120 would exceed this, so they only advertise the next lowest standard refresh rate.

1080p120 is sending 248,832,000 pixels of picture per second
4k60 is sending (2x size on each axis, refresh /2) 497,664,000 pixels per second, which is higher and thus presumably is the actual maximum capacity

So I would have expected it to support 1080p240 or 1440p135. Maybe the 4k picture is being compressed, but 1440p doesn't support this? So it would be limited to some oddball refresh rate like 75Hz or 67.5Hz.

Will charging docks eventually be able to handle 1440p at 120hz? It seems as though this is an issue with docks in general, not just the one I have.
