Few days ago I bought my first Nintendo Switch and I have to say the hardware itself is awesome. I’ve read in another thread, that a custom firmware for the Switch is coming this summer and I wonder, if it’s technically possible to use the Switch as a Remote Play device to stream your PS4 games. I know that the PS Vita does already support this feature, but obviously the Vita has huge disadvantages, such as the lower screen resolution, the non clickable analog sticks and the missing R2 and L2 buttons.

There are several PS4 Remote Play Apps out there.
Maybe they can help somehow, to code a new App for Nintendo Switch:
- Official Apps (PC / Mac): https://remoteplay.dl.playstation.net/remoteplay/lang/de/index.html
- Android App: https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/ps4-remote-play-android-thread-t3068225
- iOS App: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/r-play-remote-play-for-ps4/id1222889057?mt=8

Happy Easter!

UPDATE 04.08.2018:
PS4source is celebrating 5 years anniversary and we have collected 200€ to spend.
We are searching for great coders out there, who are able to create a Remote Play App for Nintendo Switch. If you think thats something for you, please register on our homepage and start writing about your progress HERE!
By releasing the homebrew on PS4source we will immediately transfer the 200€ to your PayPal account.

Yes, possible with REMx Launcher (as shown in video) but is slow and pointless. Hopefully it will be better if we get a Rainway app on the eShop.

Dont reply to the thread, its dead.

you can workaround it for it to work but you need a coronus max as well as wireless hdmi.
same guy's channel he made it. costs alot but your playing portable

I think rainway will allow some pc functionality but i still fear it will only work-ish over local networks which is pretty useless for me.

Great to read, that it is technically possible. I know that there are official remote play apps created by Sony for PCs and Macs. Im not a coder so i don’t know much about that stuff, but shouldn’t it be relatively simple to port these apps for the Switch?
Is there a way to view the source code of them?

No, we have no source of these. Although perhaps with a hacked Vita we could read the PS4 Remote Play app data from it. But the chances of it working are quite slim. Unless we get failoverflow's Linux for switch and we run Wine on it, I doubt we will get a "native" remote play app.

Would be great, apart from the fact remote play is a piece of steaming hot trash fro some reason. Much as I love my PS4 for some reason the Xbox streaming to Windows 10 is league's better.

I'd love to stream my Xbox to Switch and enjoy some Horizon 3 on my little ole screen.

Thats probably because Windows is made by Microsoft, who make Xbox, so they are able to make better compatibility, while the PS4 Remote Play is an application running ontop of Windows.

Even with my Sony Xperia Z2 and the official remote app it sucks here locally with my crap router, image has lot of artifacts and some fast reaction or shooting games are hard to play because of input lag.

I prefer just connecting the 5meter hdmi to my uhd TV and play PC on it with the Xone controller via wireless and I use Controller companion app to control windows trough the controller.

Apart from the fact I'm comparing it to PS4 Remote Play to PSTV and Vita. Which is still a steaming pile of hot trash; unfortunately

Nothing you can do will give you a satisfactory experience with Remote Play, it's simply terrible. Even wired it's just plain bad in comparison to Xbox streaming.

Now granted Xbox streaming has to be through a local network which limits it significantly in comparison, but god if remote play is that bad through a local network I dread to think how useless it would be over any distance. Xbox streaming on a wired network just works, flawlessly. Just a shame there's little worth playing on Xbox.

Linux would also mean we can run Steam, which means, Steam streaming!

I have to disagree.
Yesterday I visited a colleague and he gave me his MacBook to use remote play on it, so we could play Monster Hunter World together.

The overall experience was great and only sometimes I got stutters but nothing dramatically. Of course it’s not perfect, but common guys there are hundreds of games where it’s not important to have very small input lags or a full stutterfree image. Beside that Sony is updating these apps regularly and its getting better and better.

Just for info:
The remote play resolution was set to „1080p“ and the framerate to „high“. My PS4 Pro was on standby mode and connected thru a wired ethernet connection (My speed: 100 MBit/s) to my router. The MacBook Pro was connected via WiFi (Friends speed: 50 MBit/s).
Im not sure, but maybe the experience could get near to perfection with resolution set to 720p and using a wired connection instead of the build in WiFi of the MacBook Pro.

As you can see on this video, remote play works very well on an iPhone with R-Play.
The conclusion of the video is, that the App works great, but the game vice controller is terrible.

———————————

I think the general development of a remote play App for the Nintendo Switch would find great interest in the community. I’m sure that’s also the case with Steam or Xbox One streaming.

Please let us all be positive about interesting ideas for upcoming Switch homebrews and not smash all ideas down before even trying them.

This would certainly be nice to have. There was a guy on xda who reverse engineered the protocol and wrote his own Windows client (as well as extensively customising the official Android app), but he stopped working on Remote Play stuff quite a while ago, so it wouldn't be up to date with the latest protocol. I don't know if anyone else has got as deep into it more recently.

I use Remote Play on PC and it works super smooth. I get pretty much no lag. The only issue is that I use an original PS4 so its not in best quality.

Well I've tried Remote Play on all those devices, with probably 3 different ISP's over the years, all with different routers and it's been terrible every time. No matter what the settings. Yet Xbox streaming works flawlessly. So why would the Xbox streaming work and the remote play not. Remote Play is comparatively shit when compared to Xbox streaming.

Dont ask me.
Mine works smooth on highest settings so im not complaining.

It's so stupid that my net is also not that great but at the begining on my Nvidia Shield from a far far away streaming service if actually works better than PS4 official remote app in my local network, but my router is also had.

But still I wonder how can a server thousands of KM away even work better lool...

And trough internet I can make it work in a restaurant like 100 meters away from my house, it barely connects and when connecting it gets stuck all the time and with huge artifacts.

I have ADSL 24mbps down and only 1 Mbps up...
