i will try without twl and agb

If you want to get the TWL and AGB stuff to decrypt once you have Cakes working without it (if anyone else reading this needs regular firmkey.bin, a link is provided by the A9LH tutorial, btw), there's an extremely easy solution. Put the TWL and AGB files on a separate folder on your SD card, boot Cakes, move the files over using CTRXplorer or Godmode9, and warm reboot back into Cakes (enter System Tools and exit). It works.

Apparently Cakes needs part of the OS that isn't loaded yet when A9LH boots in order to decrypt from a cetk file. Since the 3DS doesn't automatically reset RAM on a warm reboot, the second time works. But it has to be able to boot first. Hence the need to move the files.

i am a fool.
as a result, I accidentally installed the April Fool's release.
(It's my first attempt at custom firmware)
After the heart attack and disappointment in myself passed, I'm sitting here wondering how far back I have to go to uninstall this and re-install using the last stable build.

The previous build doesn't have it

One kind of stupid question: where should I place that .cakes file that allows it to run region free games? In the root of the patches folder?

Well, I went down to Rev158 and I'm fine now. I'll try Rev162 again in a bit and I'll post results; it may have been the .cakes conflicting with the inability to use the CETK's.
