I think you were referring to a regular 3.5mm jack to RCA adapter or channel break out adapter like this one http://a.co/fF6cm4NAh, I'm used to that being the video section. So a stereo to a a/v stereo cable, eh? Makes sense. can't hurt to try.
3.5mm to RCA adapters are for you to change from a 3.5mm regular headphone jack to 2 RCA audio jacks (Left and Right channel for White and Red) Each of the RCA jack is a 2-conductor jack for positive and ground.
On the other hand, combo jack adapter is for you to convert a 3.5mm combo jack to a regular 3.5mm headphone jack and a regular 3.5mm microphone jack.
