Go with a hardcase carry case. I was using the foam one that came with my Vita and it does not work too well in a bag.
As for a shell I never saw the point in it. But I do use a tempered glass screen protector on the front (glass ones work way better than plastic for a touch screen) and plastic one on the back and find it keeps the Vita pretty safe.
