If you don't mind using emulators, I suggest Chrono Trigger. It's a great JRPG with a unique turn-based/active battle system and no random encounters, and easily one of the best stories I've seen.

Does that not generally mean loads of grinding, collecting ammo, fairy dust and magical potions or w/e? (also lots of talking, I'm not a fan of massive dialogues in games, if I want that I'll read a book).

Normally it does, but that's what makes Chrono Trigger so awesome... In the two play-throughs I've made of the game, I've never had to grind at all. And if you do ever find yourself in a situation where you feel your characters are "too weak" to continue, there are many cool side-quests that will have the same effect of leveling up as grinding, except they're actually fun. :D

It actually has a moderate amount of dialogue in my opinion, but that's just my opinion, and I can't really think of anything to compare it to to give you an idea. Sorry about that. :(

Yeah, you do need items, potions, etc... but not any more than you would in most RPGs (Paper Mario and Pokemon are comparable in terms of item use)

Chrono Trigger is a newbie JRPG.The difficultly is relatively low.
Really? I always felt the difficulty was moderate... But then again, I don't play many JRPGs, which might actually prove your point. :ha:

Whilst I enjoy making plenty of jokes and insulting remarks about JRPGs. I actually really enjoy the genre. So I play quite a lot and regarding Chrono Trigger, I wouldn't say the game would be a challenge to an RPG veteran. I would recommend playing it because it's a good game with a lot of charm. Though I do disagree with the "whole Chrono Trigger is amazing, greatest game evar!"

Sounds like a good game thanks, i'll keep it in mind. Though doesn't exactly fit what I was asking for... I just want linear games, you progress without worrying about stocking up on ammo, or casting potions at the right time etc.

Anything by frictional games (Amnesia and penumbra series)
and ummm psychonauts is apparently good although personally I haven't gotten around to playing it yet.

I understand. I'll let you know if I can think of anything else
