Hacking R4i SDHC 3DS before RTS version, now useless?

Hi guys, I have a bit of a newbie question. I own a R4i SDHC 3DS before the RTS version. Is this card now useless? Can I flash the firmware to make it work with the 3DS again or is it only usable on an old DS? Card was originally from http://www.r4i-sdhc.com/ I've been away from the scene for ages and it seems that my card is useless.

R4i 3DS Gold (RTS) and DSTWO are the only lasting survivors of the 2013 Nintendocaust, I do believe as far as DS-mode flashcarts go. (Unless you count the clone carts that Gateway and MT-Card include with their 3DS flash carts)

I have a R4i SDHC 3DS V5.0 and it working just fine in a 3DS XL so they still going strong haha!
