Hacking Question about vulnerability of a switch

I'm hoping my nephews switch will be vulnerable to fusee-gelee. I know that you are supposed to identify it from S/N, but I don't just have the switch to hand, at the moment, and I want to buy a 64GB SD card right now, so I can start right away when he gives me the switch in a few days.

He got it bought for him for Christmas 2017, does that make it a "first gen"?

If it's from before July 2018, it's definitely unpatched. You're good.
