Hacking Question about restoring nand

My current 3ds xl is at FW 4.2


For example, if I have backup my 4.2 nand using gateway, and then maybe later I accidentaly update my 3ds to FW 9.8. I could still use gateway to restore my from 9.8 back to 4.2 as before, right?

Gateway does not work on 9.8 so your only option would be a hard mod.

The only way to restore your nand back to 4.2 is by using a hard mod. There isn't any other way.
