Hacking Question about CFW and ODEs

So I currently have a CECH3xxx ps3 I bought 2 years ago and its currently on 4.66 OFW and looking at the information online it seems like in order to get it to work with an ODE, you need like the ODE mainboard as well as a swap diskboard. I saw the steps to do that and I just decided that it was way to much a pain to do that.
So option two is to get a older ps3 slimm early 25x and 2000 series, So for those i can downgrade from any firmware back to 3.55 using a flasher, assuming its a downgradeable model and then install a CFW and ill be done with it correct?

Ok thanks. I just wanted to ask to clarify because I haven't taken a look at the ps3 scene and what was possibly, in a few years. Once I just, it was just overwhelming haha. Looks like its time to find a early gen slim
