Do I need something like this -

R4I-SDHC-3DS-RTS-Card

If I want to download games and put them on a 32gb memory card?

And do they go straight on or do I need to do any messing about with software? I'm finding this a bit confusing I'll be honest!

The R4 cards only play DS games, not 3DS games. There are cards you can plug in and they play 3DS games--I do not like those, and I think putting custom firmware (CFW) on the 3DS gives a better result, is easier to work with, and more fun to do.

With CFW, you simply put 3DS games on your internal SD card, have an app install those files, and you can play your games. With CFW you can also install an app that plays DS games, if you would like to not use the R4 card again.
.

Installing CFW on your 3DS can make use of R4 cards. Those cards are temporarily used during the installation of CFW onto your 3DS--after those steps, you do not need access to nor need to own an R4 card again. Finishing installation of CFW, you can return your R4 card into its regular condition.

When CFW is on your 3DS, you do not need specialised software to install and play games. With certain specialised cards you do need special software, but as I said in the first paragraph, I do not like those cards.

The guide to installing CFW on your 3DS is the 3DS Hack Guide. The majority of users here will point you towards it. I find it easy to diligently follow.

Well my New 2DS XL came through the post and it's got the latest 11.13.0-45E firmware on it ☹️, is it possible to downgrade the firmware on this? Or will I have to wait for the site you kindly pointed me to to update their hack? Thanks again!

In your first post you mention you wish to put games onto your internal SD. Unless you buy those directly from the eShop, you will need to put custom firmware (CFW) on your 3DS.

Luckily, 3DS'es with firmware 11.13.0-45E can get CFW. Unfortunately, to get CFW on the 3DS, I have only used methods that require some kind of flashcard (like the R4, which I find to be pretty cheap right now). I do not know if methods exist that do not require a flashcard.

Thanks for your reply, I want to put 3DS games on the internal memory (that's the 32gb Micro SD card isn't it?), but the link you gave me in your first reply says it only works up to 11.13.0 and I have 11.13.0-45E. I'm happy to purchase an R4 card to do this, but could you point me in the direction of a CFW tutorial for my 11.13.0-45E device using an R4 like you said?
Thanks a lot for your help!

The 32 GB microSD is indeed the internal memory card you would install the games on. Upgrading is really easy if you ever decide to get a bigger microSD card.

Using that guide will work on 11.13.0-45E. If you look at the first page, it says "CFW can be set up on any console on any version (but may require additional tools / accessories for versions >11.3.0)."

Furthermore, on the Getting Started page, you'll read that in the table for compatibility of firmware and what method to use the 'from' and 'to' columns are inclusive, so they go from and including up to and including certain firmware.

As far as I understand, 11.13.0-45E means you are on official firmware 11.13.0 and the -45 means you have a browser installed (because it's not -0) and I believe the E means you have firmware for the European region.

In conclusion, I think you can use the CFW method for firmware from 11.12.0 up to and including 11.13.0 (Seedminer, which I have never done) or use an All Versions method (ntrboot, which requires a flashcard and I have done multiple times before.)

If you want to see which flashcard comes preflashed with ntrboot, look on the ntrboot page.

EDIT: Browsing the Ebay UK, I think I see a good one here (the Grey version is RTS, and on the ntrboot page it says all RTS versions are compatible). It's a UK seller selling for 6 Pounds Sterling plus whatever postage they ask. DISCLAIMER: I am neither the seller nor do I know them, and I can therefore not guarantee the card is genuine or vouch for the seller. Maybe check their feedback first.

In general, try and refrain from buying cards from Asian regions, as I hear a large proportion of fake cards stems from that internet sellers out of that region.

For starters, abuse the friend system to get your system's movable.sed file, which is imperative. Then, there's a free eShop game (Steel Diver Sub Wars) that can be exploited via steelhax that lets you into the HBL once you have your movable.sed. Then, run Frogtool to inject the Japanese Flipnote Studio into Health and Safety Infomation. From there, you can execute Lennyhax, allowing you to install B9S, and therefore Luma3DS (the best CFW), without a flashcard. This is my preferred option, but you can replace steelhax with any other exploitable game (Cube Ninja via Ninjhax, Freakyforms Deluxe via Freakyhax, etc.)

Are you saying here that I can use a bigger micro SD card? I thought 32gb was the limit? Thanks for the reply by the way

As far as I know you can use microSD (or microSDHC, or microSDXC) cards that have capacities like 512 GB, as long as you format it to Fat32 with 32 kB clusters.

I did read that cards with a higher capacity than 128 GB tend to slow down. Since last week I have a SanDisk 64 GB microSDXC card and it works absolutely fine.

When you get a card--either brand new or second-hand--check it for faults using the h2test application.

Awesome. You learn something new every day.

Do you know if a written guide like 3DS Hack Guide exists for this process?

There sure is! It's INSIDE 3ds.hacks.guide, above the method for flashcard owners, where it's called "seedminer".
