I wonder when xbox will come out with a handheld?
Are there any handheld games competing with the psp and the ds? The iPod touch could be considered a hand held right?

ontopic: The 3D is good enough already.

If that isn't fanboyism I don't know what is.

Does it really matter to you personally who sells more units?

It matters to the game publishers who make the games for the system which the end user plays on them.

I don't particularly want to watch movies on the 3DS, I'd probably only download one of them for the novelty value.

The CPU and GPU would have to be stronger, hence the extra charge. But, if you leave the touch screen alone, you won't have to drive 2 screens.blew my mind. 3D or no 3D.

The bottom screen is of no difference, all it's going to be used for is controls. The DS for example can only render 3D graphics on one screen at a time.

800x240 = 192000 pixels
2560x720 = 1843200 pixels = 9.6x the resolution of the 3DS.

Do you have a time machine so you can travel to the future so you can get hold of this magical graphics processor that renders pixels 9.6x faster than the 3DS while still giving atleast 10hours battery life?

Either that or the battery will be the size of a UPS.

I wish it rained gold, but it doesn't.

How long do you think it would take intel to develope such a chipset? How much do you think it would cost? If they were tasked to do this, do you think they would fail at doing this?

Not sure how much it matters to the game publishers. Seems like each system gets its fair share of quality games. The system that sells the most, gets the most shovel ware I find.

The Wii and PS2 is a perfect example. Both sold like hotcakes, both have great games but both have the most shovel ware out of any competitor systems.

You mean like Larrabee?

Intel's graphics processors are sooooo powerful.

Higher selling systems get more games. That means more crap games (which shouldn't matter unless you're forced to buy them at gunpoint) and more good games. Developers are willing to put more resources into games if there are more potential customers for them, basic business sense.

If you make your console prohibitively expensive to appeal to people who want some kind of 3D iPod IMAX experience, who aren't even your core customers, you're not going to sell many units and developers aren't going to want to back your system until you can demonstrate that it's really going to sell. If Nintendo had made the system of your dreams we woudn't have seen anywhere near as many third party games at E3.

As for making two versions, Nintendo really don't want to split their user-base from the off. Either you're expecting devs to make two versions of their games or you're expecting people to fork out for a really powerful system and then have games that are the same as for the less powerful system with just some shoddy upscaling. That is not going to make people feel they've got their money's worth, considering they're buying a games console.

Veho,

I have no doubt that the 3D will work on the 3DS. I have no doubt that it will look great on the 3DS.

I am saying that 3D is supposed to engulf your range of vision. By doing this, things feel like they surround you.

I just question if a small 3.5 screen will be able to do this for you. I just doubt it will. To me, I think it will feel more like I am playing a shoe box diarama. then something that surrounds me.
ITs "3D" not "VR" if you want that nintendo all ready has that iits called the Virtual boy but seriously they have 3D VR headsets for pc like 3 games use them too gpo spend 300 on those instead and let everyone else be happy with what nintendo gives us

Let's see... 6" screens eliminates the concept of portable, as that thing would be gigantic. Not to mention a 6" screen, especially a 3D one, would give you... 3 hours of battery life? Horrible idea.

Let's see....

To obtain 720p, you'd need to increase the current resolution, which is not a linear increase in production costs
Having an even larger screen to accommadate (I can't spell) the increased resolution is also a non-linear increase in production costs.
With the resolution increase, in order to keep the pixel fill rate ratio the same, the GPU would also have to be improved, meaning more expensive hardware, which might as well include better GPU capabilities such as poly count, also a non-linear increase in production costs.

What does that equal?

"The Playstation 3 will retail for $599 USD (at a loss to us)".

Yeah, I'm not paying that much for a handheld that already exceeded many people's expectations with what it currently does.

1- They can create games for the 3DS resolution, and the 3DS HD would upscale them to 720p
Upscaling the resolution 9.6 times is possible, of course, but it would look ugly as hell. It won't work.

I suppose you mean Microsoft.

Fully agree with this. It seems like alucard77 doesn't really get the point of a portable console: it needs to fit in your pocket. I don't see how I could fit a 'handheld' with a 6" screen in my pocket.

Well a 5 inch screen would fit in the current design.
Have you seen how fat the console is? They are struggling to fit it all in there as it is. I think the first version of the 3DS should be called the 3DS Phat right from the start this time round.

Again you have not seen the 3ds
on the 3ds the screen resolution is interpreted and displayed differently than a standard tv because there are 96000px for each eye on a 3.5inch screen thats around 132.15 PPI per eye. To put that in perspective a 480p tv is 21per inch on a 42 inch screen, or 1080p/1080i on a 42" screen 52 PPI, a psp 4.3" 480×272 128Ppi
Then the factor of each eye all of the other displays listed above only account for one image for both eyes the 3DS has different images per eye meaning more detail perceived when in 3d rather than a 2d display so in 3d its more like 236.61 PPI

Wolfmanz51,

This is a good point you make, so thank you for making it. I should include these calculations.

The PPI on the 3DS is 133.28. From my understanding, while this is per eye, it is not an additive effect. Your brain process the message as 400x240 in 3D space, it does not process it as 800x240 in 3D space. So it won't be closer to 266.56. It will remain 133.28.

Here is the numbers I have for a 50 inch equivalent as I mentioned in my post:
- 480p/i = PPI of 15.87.
- 720p/i = PPI of 29.14
- 1080p/i = PPI of 43.71
- 3DS = PPI of 133.28

So it seems that you are correct. Even at 133.28PPI, the 3DS would be 3x as good as a TV.

So the 4.9 inch screen at the same resolution would yield a PPI of 95.2, which would be more then good enough to do 3D to look like 1080p.

Thanks for correcting me on this. I knew I was missing something.

Here are the same calculation on a 70 inch

Well image upscalers don't usually work well for me (they either blur the image or have no effect) so I don't think that upscaling a 800 x 240 screen to 1280 × 720 (actually 2560 × 720 for the 3D effect) would be any good. It'd be good for movies though.

If it did work though, I could think about getting one. But no more than $300!

I can't believe this ridiculous discussion is still going.
The facts are that Nintendo aims to give the best gameplay experience at an affordable price for the general public. Considering that they have already vastly increased the graphical quality for the 3DS, and they have added 3D, accelerometer, 3 cameras, increased hard drive, etc...

I severely doubt they will further push the manufacturing cost of the 3DS just for more visuals. Nintendo aren't concerned with providing gamers with the best graphics and they never have been.

And, quite honestly, having such ridiculous visuals on such a small screen is a stupid idea anyway.

Is he still going on about this? I have full faith in Nintendo to do whats best for us consumers in terms of technology and price.

I would only get an HD model if it were the same price as the regular model. And even then I'd have to look at the battery life to see if it'd even be worth it

4- It would make it worth while to watch movies in 3D

If you've already decided that the current specs for the 3DS make the system "not worth while," then why are you so interested in the 3DS? Maybe it's just not for you. It's not like Nintendo is going to hear your cries and make changes according to your specs. I'll bet that anyone even interested in the 3DS will be more than happy with what Nintendo has already achieved. As for newer models with upgraded features releasing in the future, it's a no brainer, but that'll be a while. We haven't even seen the final 3DS hardware yet.
