Yes, backed up NAND images can only be used on the 3DS/2DS they're made from. There are ways around this but for practical purposes, SysNAND *.bin images are console unique.

Congrats. Group effort. We (as in everyone in this thread) did it.
Remember to complete the Finalizing Setup.

Finalize? I shut down and now it boots to menu. Isnt that it?

I have a nand backup as I had to flash the nand to unblock correct?
Yup.
But make an essentials backup as well, GodMode9 should tell you to when you launch it. Also good to have boot9/boot11 backups and an OTP backup (which you can make from GodMode9), boot9/boot11 aren't console unique though so they aren't essential. boot9.bin and in some cases OTP as well as movable.sed (essentials backup contains movable.sed) is needed for decrypting 3DS related files on PC (useful for converting games to cia, dumping files from games, decrypting saves for use with a save editor etc), but boot11 isn't used for much.

I wonder what the guy did to brick it? Did he say anything about it?

I bet he used a really outdated hacking guide, god only knows what kind of method he was using. Maybe the ancient one that requires downgrading to 2.1.0, which if on a n3DS/n2DS the console is updated while the console is still on 2.1.0 it will brick as it'll be running o3DS firmware.

Yes I remember now he said something about downgrading
