Gaming PSP brew?

I need some help getting my brothers PSP modded. I'm buying him one as a birthday present when I go to the US in March. I have a few questions first of all.

Is the PSP region free? If not, is there a way to fix that?

To allow him to run HB on his psp, what kind of things would I need? I've only ever done wii hacking so this is foreign to me.

Is there any danger in modding a psp?

Can someone link to a guide with a tutorial?

things needed:
1.PSP 1000 are fully moddable,PSP 2000 have models which can be hacked,others semi-hack,PSP 3000 are sem-hacked,PSPgo are not hackable
2.for PSP Phat(1k)get a Pandora battery,or update to 5.03(google)then use ChickHEN,PSP Slim(2k)uses same as PHATs,PSP Brites(3k) must have 5.03 only,above then it can't be hacked
3.after running ChickHEN use pspident to see if you have a v3 motherboard,if so you can only use 5.03 GEN-C for CFW
4.Homebrews are put inside the PSP->Game folder after getting into CFW
5.dangers is if you have a v3 and install something other than 5.03 GEN-C,

Okay thanks. Hopefully it will make more sense when I get his. I might buy it second hand (From gamestop) just to be sure it can be modded.
