Gaming PSP as a TV remote?

Is there a way to get a fat PSP to work as a remote with the latest m33 firmware? I've tried IRShell and PSP Universal Remote and while I did manage to get IRShell to run, I tried a lot of codes and didn't get a response from the television.

Some places say they require 1.5 firmware, but that there is a workaround for custom firmware? I'm pretty clueless about PSP homebrew.

IRShell requires a module from old firmware in order to use IR on new firmware... it's a bitch to set up, and it always seems like a feature or twelve are broken even after you follow all the directions.
