Gaming PSP 3000 custom firmware

Havent been on the PSP scene for a while.

My cousin's got a PSP 3000, and asking me how to install custom firmware on it.
I have no idea where to start as the google search brings me to various faqs and places...

So what would be the latest method and what would you need for it?

You can softmod it via HEN exploit if your OFW is 5.03.

Team Typhoon has already explicitly announced that their HEN will NOT be released to the public, so all of us are screwed in that case.
